Sonia Pressman Fuentes will speak at the Sarasota-Manatee Chapter of NOW meeting from 6:30 – 8:00 p.m. on Tuesday, January 15, 2008, on: “The Women’s Rights Movement: Where It’s Been, Where It’s At.” Her talk will be followed by a question-and-answer period and a book signing. The meeting will be held in the auditorium of the Selby Library, at 1331 First Street in Sarasota.
Ms. Fuentes, the first woman attorney in the Office of the General Counsel at the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC), was a founder of NOW and FEW (Federally Employed Women). She will be honored by the Veteran Feminists of America at the Harvard Club in NYC on June 9, 2008, as one of 28 American women lawyers, including U.S. Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, who fought for women’s rights in the 1960s and ‘70s.
Ms. Fuentes, the author of a memoir, Eat First—You Don’t Know What They’ll Give You, The Adventures of an Immigrant Family and Their Feminist Daughter, graduated Phi Beta Kappa from Cornell University and first in her class at the University of Miami School of Law.
The program is free and open to the public.

February 6 -National Girls & Women In Sports Day: - (NGWSD) is a special day for girls and women to celebrate their participation in sports and athletics. When Title IX was enacted in 1971, 1 in 27 girls in high school participated in athletics. One in three girls participates in athletics in high school now!
